In its interior stands out the ground floor, occupied by a Chapel covered by an arch of crucería with an embedded Calatrava cross in the central key. The architectural style clearly manifests the likes, tight techniques and elegant proportions of the Renaissance. Its main function was not defense, but the palace and pantheon of one of the noblest families of the Merindades of Castile. It was built by the Marquis of Alvarado (mayor of Medina de Pomar) and his wife, María de Velasco (daughter of the Duke of Frías and sister of the Condestable of Castilla). The initial construction of the tower dates back to the 12th century and was originally intended as a defensive building until the beginning of the 16th century, when the fighting ended, it was used as a civil residence. The whole is a building of general interest that is included by Decree for the Protection of Castles of Spain and has been declared of cultural interest. It has 11 suites with rustic decor, restaurant with capacity for 60 diners, cafeteria-bar, meeting rooms and a terrace in the garden. At present, after a long and laborious rehabilitation, completed at the end of 2007, the Historic Site is used as Hostel.

The access to the entrance hall is through an elegant double-arched archway. It has three floors and is attached to the tower. The Palace was built in the eighteenth century, as recorded in the inscription of a window´s lintel (1784) by the Marquis of Rivaherrera, related by marriage to the Alvarado´s family. The Tower of the sixteenth century, has four floors and a total built area of 413, 95 m2 and the Palace of the eighteenth century, with three floors and a total area of 1,254, 70 m2. Historic building "Torre-Palacio de los Alvarado", consisting of Tower, Palace, Chapel, Courtyards and Grounds, with a total built area of approximately 1670 m2, on a plot of 1163.50 m2.
